Decorating a cake with an edible icing image is an easy way to create a professional and personalised look for any occasion. Whether you're celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or special event, edible images add a stunning touch with minimal effort. Follow these simple steps to apply edible icing sheets to your cake like a pro!
What You'll Need:
- A cake covered with buttercream, fondant, or ganache
- Edible icing image of your choice
- A pair of clean, dry scissors (if trimming is needed)
- A small brush and water (optional, for fondant application)
- A cake smoother or clean hands for gentle pressing
- Sprinkles & edible decorations (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Prepare Your Cake
Ice your cake with buttercream, fondant or ganache. For best results, ensure your finish is smooth and level. If using buttercream, let it set slightly so it's not too soft.

2. Trim the Edible Image (if necessary)
Remove your edible icing sheet from the airtight bag. If your edible image is pre-cut, it's ready to apply - if not, use scissors to cut out the image.

3. Remove the Backing
Gently peel the image off the plastic backing sheet. Rolling the backing sheet over the edge of your benchtop or table with the image facing up may help separate.

4. Apply the Image
For Buttercream or Ganache: Gently press the image onto the cake’s surface, starting from the centre and smoothing outward to prevent air bubbles.
For Fondant: Lightly brush the fondant with a small amount of water before applying the image to help it adhere. Take care not to wet the image itself.

5. Smooth Out the Image
Use a cake smoother or clean, dry hands to gently press the image onto the cake, ensuring it fully adheres without wrinkles or bubbles.

6. Add Finishing Touches
For a polished look, decorate the edges with piped buttercream, sprinkles and sweets!

Tips for Success:
Store edible images in a cool, dry place until ready to use. Don't store in the fridge.
Keep the image in the airtight bag - otherwise it will be affected by the humidity in the air. If it is too moist, the image will stick to the backing sheet, too dry and the image will crack.
Make sure your hands are clean and dry when handling the image. Any moisture may cause the ink on the image to run.
If the image does not peel away from the backing easily, place in a freezer for 1-2 minutes to make removal easier. Take care not to get water onto the image.
Colours will show best on white or lighter icing colours. Dark colours, or chocolate icing may darken the lighter parts of the edible image.
